Flexible
Manufacturing Model

Penn Color understands that every customer has different needs and that every project requires a different perspective, both from the product perspective and the manufacturing perspective. Customers take advantage of Penn Color’s extensive capabilities and resources in R&D to select Penn Color stock products or work with Penn Color on custom formulations. Penn Color also offers a very flexible approach to tolling, depending on the capabilities the customer wants to take advantage of. One type of tolling model allows customers to bring their formulas to Penn Color, and our team will handle the rest of the manufacturing chain, including raw materials supply, manufacturing process engineering, and manufacturing itself. On the other end of the spectrum, another tolling model sees the customers covering a broader scope, including formulas, material supply, and manufacturing process engineering, leaving only manufacturing itself to Penn Color. In between, manufacturing at Penn Color follows many other tolling models and variants.

Tolling Capabilities
& Equipment

Penn Color supports tolling projects from its multiple sites in the US, Europe, and Asia, managing supply risks through redundancies and backup plans between sites at a global level. Penn Color has the capabilities and the capacity to take on tolling projects typically ranging from 50 lbs. specialty products, to 50,000 lbs. large volume products. Penn Color has close to 300 pieces of equipment directly used in production globally, supporting 15 different techniques of particle size reduction, for the production of thermoplastic masterbatches, liquid dispersions, finished inks, and compounds. All tolled products follow Penn Color’s world-class standards of product safety, quality, and lot-to-lot consistency.

  • Extrusion

Extrusion machines melt raw plastic using mainly shear, as the material is processed by one or several screws in a barrel, with the addition of colorants and other additives. The material gets homogenized and is forced through a dye to produce a profile, which can be cooled and pelletized.

  • Horizontal & Vertical Media Mills

In media mills, a pre-mixed liquid/solid slurry is pumped into a chamber that contains grinding media. The media is accelerated by rotors, impacting, shearing, and ultimately reducing the size of the solid slurry particles.

  • Basket Mills

In basket mills, a pump wheel agitates beads and circulates a mill base through a basket. In the basket, a screen retains the milling beads but allows the mill base to pass through. The mill base recirculates through the basket until it reaches the desired particle size.

  • High-Speed Mixer

High-speed mixers use a rotor that turns at high speed within a stationary stator. The process reduces the size of particles, with mechanical shear of the material between the rotor and stator, and hydraulic shear as the material is expelled at high speed into the surrounding mix.

  • Ball Mills

Ball mills use a vessel filled with the material to be ground plus a grinding medium such as stainless-steel balls. As the vessel rotates on its axis, the balls are lifted on the rising side of the vessel and then cascade down, reducing the size of the material by impact.

  • Two Roll Mills

Two roll mills use rolls arranged side by side and rotating toward each other at different speeds. The material is charged between the rolls and is entrained into the gap by the rotation of the rolls, adhesion, and friction, mixing the material and reducing the size of the material by shear.
