Where a masterbatch is a concentrate of ingredients designed to be let down, compounds constitute up to 100% of a given plastic part as an end-product. Compounding helps enhance the aesthetic, physical, thermal, and electrical properties of the base polymer, by adding the right pigments and additives including fillers, reinforcement fibers, lubricants, nucleating agents, UV stabilizers, flame retardants, and other polymers and elastomers. To formulate a custom-formulated compound, Penn Color leverages the knowledge and experience of how each individual ingredient can alter the characteristics of the polymer, as well as how those ingredients interact with each other. Formulations come to life through the compounding operation itself, which brings together the base resin and all the additives. Finished Inks
Penn Color brings its expertise all the way to the end-product, with finished inks for various applications including Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) and wall coverings. Formulating finished inks brings together, on the one hand, our core expertise in dispersions and on the other hand, our ability to let down the dispersion in a custom-formulated ink system. The ink system gives the finished inks their performance properties such as color fastness, abrasion resistance, stain resistance, chemical resistance, and washability. In addition, the ink’s system is crucial to enable maximum performance for the printing process, including print fidelity, consistent transfer, drying and curing speed, re-wet properties, broad compatibility with various substrates, and block resistance. The intricate formulation for ink systems reflects the complex set of technical expectations for finished inks, targeting a narrow space at the intersection of quality, performance, and processability.
