Penn Color continues to diversify its colorant offerings with their latest line of Pennacle Frost products for use in commonly used blow molding polymers. The new line of frost-effect colorants will provide brand owners with a vehicle to differentiate their beverage, personal care and household packaging product. These effect colors provide an enhanced matte finish that emulates the decorative spray process most commonly associated with cosmetic, ultra-premium spirits and other high-end consumer products. By integrating the frost effect into the masterbatch, one can eliminate the common ancillary costs associated with the secondary decoration process. Pennacle Frost can be tailored to meet a desired level of translucency or opacity to help achieve an aesthetic continuity across various hues. The colors are formulated to be compatible with active and passive barriers, as well as comply with the customer’s regulatory requirements, including high alcohol.

Doylestown, PA- Dr. Richard Johnson, Global Regulatory Leader at Penn Color, presented a paper entitled “Global Impact of EU Regulatory Activities” at the recent Caps and Closures meeting sponsored by Plastics News. Dr. Johnson discussed the changes in product requirements that users of caps and closures are now asking their suppliers to meet.  While some requirements cover food contact, other requirements are also appearing as many brand owners are instituting their own, company specific, restricted substances lists.  These lists contain specified chemicals which suppliers can avoid using, but most lists also define certain types of hazardous chemicals, such as carcinogens, that must not be used. This presents a different challenge to suppliers, as there is no globally recognized list for these types of chemicals.

Dr. Johnson stated that even in the absence of accepted lists, the situation regarding such hazardous chemicals is changing, especially in the EU.  The EU, under REACH, is reviewing information that companies submit on chemicals.  One outcome of these reviews can be a decision to reclassify chemicals and assign new hazards, such as concluding a chemical fits the EU criteria to be labeled a carcinogen.  These reviews occur only for the 8000 chemicals registered so far, mainly high volume chemicals.  By June 2018 many low volume chemicals will be registered and open to review.  He noted that these particular chemicals are often key components that are used in many high performing products.  Penn Color will continue to follow closely these regulatory activities in Europe, as decisions on the classifications of chemicals will change what chemicals fall under the various restricted substances lists. Penn Color will be able to identify potential problem materials well ahead of any final decisions, which will give the company time to work closely with customers to resolve any issues, and help guide the development of new products and technical platforms.

Penn Color, Inc (PCI), one of the largest color and additive masterbatch producers in the world, announced a major expansion to their existing Research Center located on their 130-acre campus in Hatfield, PA.

The new expansion – nearly 30,000 square feet – will be dedicated to the design and development of color and additive masterbatches for the plastics industry.  This expansion will enable PCI to grow and expand their capabilities for color matching, sample extrusion, accelerated weathering, physical testing, additive development, and new raw material evaluation. The expansion will also include significant enhancements to their Color Innovation Center, and allow Penn to expand their array of applications equipment, which already includes PET and PP blow molding, film and sheet extrusion, and tube extrusion.  Penn Color plans to break ground in the spring of 2015, and completion by the end of the year.

“The additional space and equipment planned for this Research Center will allow Penn Color to do more, faster, to support our growing worldwide customer base,” according to Jim Walsh, Technical Director of Thermoplastics at Penn Color.  “We’re giving our research team the best possible tools to work with, so they can develop new colorants and additives for packaging, industrial films, building and construction, and many other target markets.”

As part of this expansion, PCI will also increase the footprint of their analytical laboratory and expand the capabilities.  Penn Color currently utilizes thermal and chemical analysis instrumentation including MDSC, TGA, Dynamic Shear Rheometer, FTIR(ATR attachment), GC/MS, GPC, HPLC, UV/VIS/IR Spectrophotometer, and a variety of laser based particle size analyzers."‘Penn Color is committed to continue to augment our analytical capabilities for more detailed chemical analysis of plastic compounds, masterbatches & finished parts, and support our additive and long term product development groups," adds Walsh.

“Our 24 hour color matching service & sample extrusion will be expanded to support our customers in the plastics markets that demand quick turnaround, including consumer and industrial packaging, single and multi-layer sheet & thermoforming, toys, outdoor recreational products, housewares, transportation and more,” adds Walsh.

The new laboratory includes several types of advanced computer color matching systems, including formulation software used in PET, Polyolefins, Styrenics, PVC, PMMA and others. The extensive color database developed for the new color matching systems is currently being integrated throughout Penn Color’s Research and Development and Quality Control laboratories worldwide.

Another highlight of the new Plastics Design Center will be a Customer Innovation Area.  “This will provide exciting new interactive and hands on service to increase the speed and enhance the experience of new color development,” says Bob Kaminski, Director of Market Development at Penn Color. Brand owners and converters will be able to view an extensive library of color concepts, collaborate with our research team to create a vision, and our team will convert our customer’s vision into a final part molded on any piece of our applications equipment.

Doylestown, PA - Penn Color, a global supplier of Color and Additive Masterbatches, is proud to announce the launch of Pennacle-O, a revolutionary new colorant system for PET. The new system is designed to significantly improve colorant distribution and eliminate the swirls often found in opaque preform and bottle applications, which have long been a challenge for converters in the Packaging industry. The technology utilizes a proprietary blend of modified materials that do not require pre-drying, will maintain the Intrinsic Viscosity (IV) of the finished bottle, are fully compatible with PET, and are FDA and EU compliant for food packaging applications. This technology will be marketed alongside the highly successful Pennacle PET color concentrate system, which has been labeled an industry leader in the coloring of PET for the past 10 years. Pennacle-O is available in micro granular form for accurate dosing at low usage levels. Pennacle and Pennacle-O systems are designed to reduce the traditional processing issues that have been associated with conventional liquid, wax, and other solid based PET coloring systems.
